When Teens Pray

Discovering Your Identity and Making the Right Decisions Through Prayer — a resource from The Victory Horasis Initiative distributed to teenagers at every outreach.

The teenage years are a sensitive stage of life. During this period, young people seek to discover their identity and make decisions that can either build or negatively affect their future. This resource introduces you to a proven pathway that can help you understand yourself, make godly decisions, and positively influence others.

Two Major Challenges Teenagers Face

1

Decision-Making

Decision-making involves choosing between two or more options. God has given us the ability to make choices, but the decisions we make can either build or destroy our lives. As teenagers, we encounter choices daily. Sometimes, we make wrong decisions because of ignorance, carelessness, or pressure from others.

2

Identity

Identity is the understanding of who you are. During the teenage years, it is easy to be influenced by people around us, leading us to imitate others and lose sight of who we truly are. But how can we discover our true identity and make the right decisions?

The answer is PRAYER

What Is Prayer?

Prayer is communication with God. It is one of the ways we relate to Him, express our hearts, and receive guidance through His Word and Spirit. Prayer helps us grow in our relationship with God, understand His will, and experience His wisdom through His answers.

Prayer is not:

  • Merely asking God for things
  • A means of controlling God
  • Bargaining with God or showing off our spirituality

"Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not."

Jeremiah 33:3

God reveals His will through His Word, and we learn to trust and live by it through faith. John 17:17 says, "Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth." The power of prayer rests in God's power, not our human ability. Our understanding of God's character helps us appreciate His answers, even when they differ from our expectations (John 15:3).

Principles of Prayer

Just as healthy relationships require effective communication, our relationship with God requires consistent fellowship with Him. Three important principles of prayer are:

01

The Word of God

God's Word reveals His will. As teenagers, we must learn to pray in accordance with His will and allow His Word to shape our desires and requests. To develop an effective prayer life, make studying and understanding the Bible a priority.

John 17:17 John 15:3
02

The Posture of the Heart

Our heart posture refers to our attitude when approaching God. Through His Word, we learn to approach Him with humility, sincerity, and reverence. God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. We must worship God in spirit and in truth.

Psalm 51:17 James 4:6 John 4:24
03

Praying According to God's Will

Prayer is not about forcing God to fulfil our desires; it is about trusting Him and aligning our requests with His will. When we ask anything according to God's will, He hears us.

1 John 5:14

The Results of Prayer

The Fruit of God

As we remain connected to Jesus through His Word, prayer, and fellowship, His life becomes evident in us — godly character, spiritual growth, and the ability to live a life that pleases Him.

"I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing."

John 15:5

Knowledge of God and Yourself

Effective communication with God deepens our understanding of His character and helps us discover who we are in Him. Through encounters with God, He reveals Himself and leads people into greater understanding — as He did with Peter (John 1:41–42; Matt 16:15–18) and Cornelius (Acts 10).

Guidance

Through prayer and His Word, God provides guidance in making the right decisions. His Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path, and the Holy Spirit guides believers into all truth. God can also use parents and trusted people to provide wise counsel.

Psalm 32:8 Psalm 119:105 John 16:13

How Can You Have Access to the Father?

Through Jesus Christ! Jesus is the way to the Father.

"I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."

John 14:6

Through Jesus, we receive salvation and begin a relationship with God. If you have not accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour, and you desire to know God personally, receive His life, and grow in His guidance, you can pray sincerely:

The Prayer of Salvation

Lord Jesus, I believe that You died for me so that I may have life in abundance. I confess You as my Lord and personal Saviour. Please save me from sin and its bondage, set me free, and give me Your Spirit to help me live according to Your will. Thank You, Lord, because I trust You have heard me. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Welcome to Your New Life!

Congratulations on taking this step of faith! When you place your faith in Jesus Christ, you begin a new life in Him. Do not allow guilt over your past to keep you from growing in God's grace.

2 Corinthians 5:17

Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation; old things have passed away, and all things have become new.

Romans 8:1

There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
